Energize Your Growth: 7 Practices to Grow and Thrive

The only thing that can grow is the thing you give energy to. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

As a Freelance coach, I work with people searching for ways to grow and move to what's next, stay relevant, live where they want or travel, and continue using the skills they've honed over decades.

To continue thriving and growing, you must keep sharing your skills and experiences while finding new ways to stay connected to the world. By focusing your energy on growth, you can remain active, engaged, and open to new opportunities—whether exploring a new career path, relocating, traveling, or staying curious about the world.

Investing in your growth in meaningful ways keeps you thriving and ready for whatever comes next. Learning to freelance is an excellent way to channel this energy. It provides earning power and a platform to share your expertise, connect with others, and maintain a sense of purpose as you navigate life's evolving opportunities.

Freelancing offers a unique opportunity to stay engaged and connected, making it an excellent option for those seeking meaning through and beyond "what's next."

Here are some practical ways to energize your continued growth, whether you're nearing a life transition or simply looking to keep your life purposeful and engaging.

✅ Set Clear Intentions

  • Why It Matters: Intentionally choosing where to focus your energy helps direct your actions and thoughts toward growth.

  • How to Do It: Start each day with a clear intention for your goals. Whether mastering a new skill or adjusting to a new environment, setting an intention keeps your energy aligned with your desired growth.

✅ Prioritize Self-Care

  • Why It Matters: Physical and mental well-being are the foundations of growth. Good health can help maintain energy levels, making it easier to sustain efforts.

  • How to Do It: Incorporate regular exercise, sufficient sleep, balanced nutrition, and mindfulness practices like meditation into your daily routine. This will ensure your energy reserves are solid and ready for anything.

✅ Continuous Learning (my personal favorite)

  • Why It Matters: Growth often requires new knowledge and skills. Continuous learning keeps you adaptable and open to new opportunities.

  • How to Do It: Invest your time in learning new tools, techniques, or languages relevant to the life you want. Take online courses, attend workshops, or read books that can enhance your expertise and open new avenues to grow and "become."

✅ Focus on Positive Relationships

  • Why It Matters: Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive people can boost your energy and support personal growth.

  • How to Do It: Build a network of like-minded individuals who inspire you. Engage in online and offline communities that align with your goals. Seek coaches 😉 mentors, or peers who can provide guidance and motivation.

*NOTE — If you're putting up with negative relationships or making excuses for them, consider leaving them behind. Those who carry old narratives into the present and future don't support growth.

✅ Embrace Challenges and Reflect on Growth

  • Why It Matters: Challenges are often where the most growth occurs. Facing them with the right mindset can transform obstacles into building blocks toward the life you want, being all you can for yourself and others. Regular reflection lets you assess what's working and not, enabling you to direct your energy more effectively.

  • How to Do It: When facing a difficult situation, shift your perspective to view it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Set aside daily, weekly, or monthly time to reflect on your progress and consider what has been successful and needs adjustment. Use this practice to recalibrate your efforts, ensuring your energy is always directed toward the most impactful areas.

✅ Eliminate Energy Drainers

  • Why It Matters: Energy-draining activities or people can hinder your ability to grow. Examples include overcommitting, perfectionism, negative self-talk, judging others, chronic complainers, drama seekers, manipulators, boundary pushers, those with a victim mentality, and narcissists.

Identifying and eliminating these drains helps you maintain a high energy level for growth.

  • How to Do It: Identify tasks, habits, or relationships that deplete your energy without contributing to your growth. Gradually reduce or eliminate these, freeing energy for more productive and growth-oriented activities.

*NOTE—This isn't an overnight feat. This practice starts with a commitment to yourself and staying present in every moment to what is happening around you. It's OK to move on from energy-draining activities and people. ❤️

✅ Celebrate Small Wins

  • Why It Matters: Recognizing and celebrating small successes keeps you motivated and reinforces the positive energy you're investing in your growth.

  • How to Do It: Set milestones and celebrate when you achieve them. Whether it's finishing a project or course or mastering a new skill, acknowledging these achievements fuels your enthusiasm and energy for continued growth.

As you navigate your journey of growth and transition, remember that the energy you invest in yourself today can shape the life you want tomorrow. Adopting these seven practices allows you to stay active, engaged, and thriving, regardless of your path.
